Paul Winter-Hart

The dynamic heartbeat and a driving force behind Kula Shaker's explosive live shows, Paul Winter-Hart provides the muscular, intricate percussion that powers the band's psychedelic rock sound.

Early Life & Joining The Kays

Born in Hammersmith, London, and raised in Somerset, Paul began drumming at an early age, drawn to the powerful, unrestrained playing styles of classic British rock and R&B drummers. In the early 1990s, an advert in a local music paper connected him with Crispian Mills and Alonza Bevan.

Joining their fledgling outfit - and performing under the moniker The Kays - Winter-Hart quickly became essential to the band's identity.

The Engine Room of Kula Shaker

Winter-Hart’s drumming is defined by its energy, crisp snare work, and relentless drive. From the thunderous fills of "Govinda" and "Hey Dude" to the precise, rolling beats behind "Tattva" and "303", Paul's locked-in chemistry with the rest of the band created one of the most potent rhythm sections of the Britpop era.

While often noted as the quietest and most reserved member of the band offstage, his commanding presence behind the kit is central to the high-octane energy Kula Shaker delivers on stage and in the studio.

Other Projects & Session Work

Following Kula Shaker’s late-90s hiatus, Paul remained an in-demand drummer across the UK alternative scene. He formed the rock outfit Thirteen:13, worked with psych-rock outfit Goldray (collaborating with Reef guitarist Kenwyn House), and performed with alternative rock group Black Casino & The Ghost.

In addition to his band projects, Winter-Hart has contributed widely as a session drummer, recording and touring with singer-songwriter Matt Hales' acclaimed project Aqualung, appearing on albums including Still Life and Strange and Beautiful.
