Thirty years after their kaleidoscopic debut album K stormed to the summit of the UK charts, Kula Shaker have announced K-Reinkarnate—a complete, live-to-tape re-recording of the classic 1996 album, scheduled for release on 5 February 2027 via Strange F.O.L.K. Records.
Steering clear of standard digital remasters and demo vault packages, the band opted to capture the entire album live to 2-inch analogue tape at Middle Farm Studios in Devon. The sessions bring together (deets for the new fans) band members Crispian Mills (lead vocals, guitar), Alonza Bevan (bass), Jay Darlington (organ, keyboards), and Paul Winter-Hart (drums), with mixing handled by Peter Miles and Ash Howes following their work on 2025's Wormslayer.
Live Analogue Re-Invention
Rather than attempting an archival replication of John Leckie’s original 1996 production, K-Reinkarnate captures how thirty years of continuous live performance have reshaped the songs. Played in real time with all four members together in the room, the recordings lean into spontaneous organic grooves, heavy organ textures, and raw guitar energy unconstrained by digital safety nets.
Unearthed 1996 Tapes & Expanded Tracklist
Beyond the core album cuts, K-Reinkarnate incorporates songs that some may not know were originally bound to the debut era, including "Hush", "Shower Your Love", and "Drop in the Sea".
An archival highlight of the release is "She’s So Free". Sourced from an unfinished 1996 multi-track master tape, the band laid down new instrumentation alongside the original session tracks in 2026, effectively collaborating across three decades with their younger selves.

"Govinda (Reinkarnate)" Lead Single & Video
Leading the release campaign is an all-new video to accompany the re-recording of the band’s landmark UK Top 10 single, "Govinda". Reaffirming the group’s psychedelic roots, frontman Crispian Mills reflected on the enduring significance of the track:
“‘Govinda’ has been with us since day one. It was the first song we ever played, blagging our way onto the Krishna stage at Glastonbury 1993, and in many ways it’s the song that came to define us. Without doubt, it gave us our own unique identity and sound during the Britpop bunfight, with all the bands vying for attention, and in hindsight, it was way ahead of its time, with kirtan. Of course, George Harrison was the first to popularise it with ‘My Sweet Lord,’ and we were very much into all that.”
